Kitchen porter certifications — what UK KPs should hold
UK kitchen porters operating in commercial kitchens should hold a small but specific set of credentials. Here is what to expect and what to ask for when booking either direct-hire or agency.
Level 2 Food Safety
The baseline qualification for any commercial kitchen role. Covers food handling, hygiene, cross-contamination prevention and basic HACCP awareness. Achievable in a day-long course; valid for 3 years.
EHO inspectors check that kitchen staff hold this. A KP without it can become a Confidence in Management negative finding at inspection.
Right-to-work verification
All UK kitchen workers must have valid right to work. Verification can be via Share Code (digital), passport+visa (manual), or BRP card. Operators are legally responsible for verifying RTW before employment starts. Agency operatives must have been verified by the agency.
Allergen Awareness
For sites where the KP touches plated food (some banqueting, plate-up runner roles): Allergen Awareness training is increasingly required. Online course, ~2 hours, free or low-cost.
Site-specific inductions
Beyond general qualifications, individual sites carry their own induction requirements:
- Hotel kitchens: corporate brand-standards induction (typically 30-60 mins on arrival).
- Airline catering / aviation: aviation security clearance (CAA-overlapping); takes days to arrange.
- Government / royal-quarter: security vetting; can take weeks.
- School / care-home / hospital: enhanced DBS check.
